Terms of Service

Version 2026-10-31. Last updated: October 31, 2026.

These terms are an agreement between BEPA Ventures LLC, a Texas limited liability company doing business as Lantern, of 5900 Balcones Dr, Ste 100, Austin, TX 78731, USA ("Lantern", "we", "us"), and the business that signs up for or uses Lantern ("you", "the customer").

#1. The agreement

  1. The agreement is made up of these terms and the documents they name:
    • the Acceptable Use Policy;
    • for the cloud plan, the Data Processing Addendum;
    • for the self-hosted plan, the Self-Hosted Software License;
    • the Support and responsibilities page and the Refund and cancellation policy;
    • your order: the plan, number of sites and price you choose at checkout, or an order form or quote that both of us sign.
  2. If these documents conflict, this order applies: a signed order form, but only where it says expressly that it changes these terms; then the Data Processing Addendum, for the processing of personal data; then these terms; then the other documents named above. Terms in your purchase order, vendor portal or other paperwork do not apply, even if we accept or sign it to process payment.
  3. You accept the agreement by ticking the acceptance box at sign-up or checkout, by signing an order form that refers to it, or by using Lantern. We record the version you accepted, the date and time, and the account.

#2. Who can use Lantern

  1. Lantern is for businesses. It is not offered to consumers or for personal, family or household use.
  2. The person who signs up must be at least 18 years old and must be authorized to bind the business named at sign-up. By accepting these terms that person confirms both, and confirms that the details given are accurate.
  3. Everyone who uses your account or portal must be a member of your staff, a contractor working for you, or a person at a client of yours to whom you give access. You must not give access to anyone under 18.
  4. You may not use Lantern if you are on a US government list of prohibited or restricted parties, or in a country or region subject to comprehensive US sanctions. You will not export or give access to Lantern in breach of US export control or sanctions laws.

#3. Managed service providers and your clients

Many customers are managed service providers (MSPs) who use Lantern to look after their clients' networks.

  1. Before you monitor a network, scan it, collect its logs or flows, open an SSH session to its devices or run automation against it, you must have the owner's authorization to do so. For a client's network that means authorization from the client, normally in your agreement with them. You must be able to show it to us if we ask in connection with a complaint.
  2. You are responsible for your agreements with your clients, for telling them what Lantern collects, and for any consent or notice the law requires for data about their staff or users (for example names that appear in logs).
  3. Your clients are not parties to this agreement and have no rights under it. You will not make promises to them on our behalf. Requests or complaints from your clients about their data go to you; if they reach us, we pass them on to you as the Data Processing Addendum describes.
  4. You are responsible for the people you give access to, including client users, and for what they do.

#4. What Lantern is

Lantern maps and monitors computer networks. It is offered two ways:

  • Cloud: we host a portal for you at a subdomain of lanternnms.com, and you run a Lantern collector at each site you monitor. The collector connects out to your portal.
  • Self-hosted: you run the Lantern appliance on your own hardware, under the Self-Hosted Software License. We provide the software, a license file, updates and email support.

Lantern reads from your devices and never changes their configuration on its own. To read, it uses SNMP, the devices' read-only web APIs and, for configuration backups, a fixed list of read-only "show" commands over SSH, on a schedule and after changes. Anything that changes a device comes from a person: one of your users typing in an SSH session started from Lantern, or an automation job that someone you authorize runs or schedules in your own AWX. You decide which devices and address ranges Lantern can reach and with which credentials.

#5. Cloud early access

The cloud plan is in early access. From the day you subscribe, your portal address is reserved for you and online. The hosted portal itself is still being completed: features, including signing in to your portal and connecting collectors, are delivered as they are released, and we email account owners when they become available. During early access features may change, and some may be missing or limited, and there is no service level commitment. The price you pay during early access is the price shown at checkout; it changes only as section 8 allows.

#6. Your account

  1. You give us accurate sign-up details and keep them current, including a working email address for each owner.
  2. You sign in to your Lantern account with one-time links sent to your email address. Keep that mailbox secure: anyone who can read it can sign in. Turn on two-step sign-in for your portal administrators where Lantern offers it.
  3. Tell us at once at support@lanternnms.com if you think someone has used your account without permission.

#7. Plans, sites and fair use

  1. Prices are per site: one client network, monitored by one collector (cloud) or one appliance (self-hosted).
  2. You choose the number of sites at checkout and can change it later in your account. You must pay for at least as many sites as you monitor.
  3. Each site covers up to 250 network devices (switches, routers, firewalls and access points) under fair use. Above that, we will contact you first; we may then ask you to add sites or agree a custom plan, and we do not charge for extra devices without your agreement.

#8. Prices, payment and automatic renewal

  1. Prices are shown on lanternnms.com/pricing and at checkout in US dollars. They do not include taxes. Where we are required to collect sales tax, VAT or a similar tax, it is added at checkout or on your invoice. You pay any bank or card fees your provider charges you.
  2. There is no free trial. You are charged when you sign up for the first billing period.
  3. Your subscription renews automatically at the end of each billing period, for a period of the same length (one month or one year), and we charge the card on file at the start of each new period at the price then in effect for your plan and number of sites, until you cancel. You can cancel at any time as section 10 explains. For annual plans we email account owners a reminder at least 30 days before each renewal.
  4. Payments are processed by Stripe. Card details are entered on Stripe's pages and are never sent to or stored on our servers. Stripe's own terms and privacy policy also apply to the payment.
  5. You change your plan, number of sites or card in the billing portal (Manage billing in your account). Changes take effect at once and are invoiced at once: adding sites charges the difference for the rest of the current period; removing sites gives a credit that is used on your later invoices, not a refund. Switching between monthly and annual billing starts a new billing period, charged at once, less a credit for the unused part of the old one.
  6. We may change our prices with at least 30 days' notice by email to account owners. A new price applies from your first renewal after the notice period ends. If you do not want to pay the new price, cancel before that renewal.
  7. If you think a charge is wrong, tell us within 60 days of the charge. We will look into it and refund any charge made in error, including duplicate charges.

#9. Failed payments and suspension

  1. If a payment fails, Stripe retries it over a period of up to about four weeks, and we email account owners. If it still fails, your subscription is marked unpaid and we suspend the service: a cloud portal is locked until the balance is paid, and your collectors keep their data on site in the meantime. Paying the balance lifts the suspension. Suspension for non-payment does not delete your data.
  2. We may also suspend all or part of the service, or a user's access, if we reasonably believe it is needed to stop a serious security threat, a breach of the Acceptable Use Policy that is causing or likely to cause harm, or use that breaks the law. We will limit the suspension to what is needed, tell you why (unless the law or a security reason forbids it), and lift it once the cause is resolved.

#10. Term, cancellation and termination

  1. The agreement starts when you accept it and continues while you have an account.
  2. Cancelling a subscription (in Manage billing) stops it renewing. The cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period, and you keep the service until then. No further payments are taken for it. Payments already made are not refunded, except as the Refund and cancellation policy says.
  3. Closing your account is a separate step: once you have no active subscription, an owner can ask us at support@lanternnms.com to close the account and delete its data, as the Privacy Policy describes.
  4. Either of us may end the agreement or a subscription by written notice if the other materially breaches it and does not fix the breach within 30 days of being told about it. We may end it at once if you seriously or repeatedly breach the Acceptable Use Policy, or if you do not pay after your subscription has been suspended for 60 days.
  5. If we stop offering a plan or the service, we will give you at least 90 days' notice, and refund the unused part of any prepaid period that extends beyond the date the service ends.
  6. When a cloud subscription ends, your portal stays available read-only for 30 days. During that time you can still view it, and if you ask, we send you a copy of your portal's data. After that we delete the portal and its database. Copies in our backups expire within 30 days after that. Data on your collectors and your own backup destinations stays with you. We keep billing records and an audit log of account actions as the law requires, and we hold your portal name for 90 days after deletion so nobody else can take it over.
  7. When a self-hosted subscription ends, the license ends as the Self-Hosted Software License says. The appliance and its data stay on your hardware; we do not delete them.
  8. Sections that by their nature should survive the end of the agreement do, including sections 8 (for amounts owed), 11 to 13 and 17 to 22.

#11. Your data

  1. You own your data: everything Lantern collects from your networks and everything you or your users put into Lantern ("customer data").
  2. You give us the rights we need to host, process, transmit and back up customer data in order to provide, secure and support the service for you, and nothing more. For personal data in customer data, the Data Processing Addendum applies.
  3. We do not sell customer data, use it for advertising, or use it to train artificial intelligence models. We do not look at customer data except to provide support you ask for, to keep the service secure, or where the law requires it.
  4. We keep records about how you use our service, such as sign-in times, billing and the size of your portal, to run and bill the service. Our Privacy Policy explains them.
  5. You are responsible for the lawfulness of customer data, and for keeping the device credentials you give Lantern with the least access they need.

#12. Confidentiality

Each of us will keep the other's non-public business and technical information confidential, use it only for this agreement, and share it only with people who need it for that purpose and are bound to keep it confidential. This does not cover information that is public through no fault of the receiver, already known to it, received lawfully from someone else, or developed independently. Either of us may disclose information when the law requires, after telling the other where the law allows.

#13. Acceptable use and sensitive data

  1. You will follow the Acceptable Use Policy.
  2. Lantern is built for network operations data. You must not use the cloud service to store or process protected health information under HIPAA, payment card data under PCI DSS, criminal justice information under CJIS, export-controlled technical data, classified information, or data about children, unless we have first signed a separate agreement with you that covers it. We do not currently sign HIPAA business associate agreements.

#14. Self-hosted software

The Self-Hosted Software License sets out how you may install and use the appliance, what happens when your subscription ends, and how evaluation copies may be used.

#15. Third-party services and open source

  1. Lantern can connect to services you choose, such as your identity provider, email service, ticketing system or AWX. Your use of those services is governed by your agreements with their providers, and we are not responsible for them.
  2. Lantern includes open-source components, which are licensed under their own terms. Those terms are listed in the open-source notices and in each release package. Nothing in this agreement limits your rights under them.

#16. Support and availability

We provide support as the Support and responsibilities page describes. That page also explains which tasks are ours and which are yours for each plan. We do not offer an uptime commitment or service credits unless a signed order form says so. We may update the service, and we will announce in advance changes that remove features you rely on.

#17. Warranties

  1. Each of us confirms that it has the authority to enter into this agreement.
  2. Lantern helps you find network problems; it does not guarantee that every problem is found or prevented, and it is not a substitute for your own backups and security measures.
  3. Apart from what these terms say expressly, the service and software are provided "as is" and "as available", and we disclaim all other warranties, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement, to the extent the law allows.

#18. Limitation of liability

To the extent the law allows:

  1. neither party is liable to the other for indirect, incidental, special or consequential damages, or for lost profits, revenue or data, even if told they were possible;
  2. each party's total liability for all claims about Lantern is limited to the fees you paid us in the 12 months before the event that gave rise to the claim.

These limits do not apply to your obligation to pay fees, to either party's indemnity obligations under section 19, or where the law does not allow them to.

#19. Indemnity

You will defend and indemnify us against third-party claims, including claims by your clients, arising from your use of Lantern to monitor, scan or access networks or devices you were not authorized to, from customer data you had no right to give us, or from your breach of the Acceptable Use Policy.

#20. Disputes and governing law

  1. If a dispute arises, the party raising it sends the other a written description, and both try in good faith to resolve it for 30 days before starting a court case. Either party may still ask a court for urgent relief to protect its intellectual property or confidential information.
  2. These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Texas, USA, without regard to its conflict of laws rules. Any dispute is heard in the state or federal courts located in Travis County, Texas, and both parties accept their jurisdiction.

#21. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. We will email account owners at least 30 days before a change that reduces your rights takes effect, and post the new version here with its version date. If you keep using Lantern after that, you accept the change; if you do not accept it, you can cancel before it takes effect and the current version continues to apply until the end of your billing period. Changes required by law, or that only add to your rights, can take effect sooner.

#22. General

  1. Notices. We send notices to the email addresses of your account owners. You send notices to support@lanternnms.com and, for notices of breach or a dispute, also by post to the address below.
  2. Assignment. Neither of us may transfer the agreement without the other's consent, except to a successor in a merger or sale of all or most of the business or assets concerned, after giving notice.
  3. Events beyond control. Neither of us is liable for a delay or failure caused by events beyond its reasonable control, such as a failure of the internet or of a hosting provider, but this does not excuse paying fees.
  4. Publicity. We will not name you as a customer or use your logo without your permission.
  5. Independent parties. The agreement does not make either of us the other's agent, partner or employee.
  6. Whole agreement. The agreement is the whole agreement between us about Lantern and replaces earlier discussions. If part of it cannot be enforced, the rest still applies. Not enforcing a right is not a waiver of it.
